After these things the Word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.
[ref]

And Abram said, Lord Jehovah, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the son of the inheritance of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
[ref]

And Abram said, Behold, You have given me no seed; and lo, a son of my house inherits from me.
[ref]
4
And behold, the Word of Jehovah came unto him, saying, This one shall not inherit from you, but one who shall come forth from your own body shall inherit from you.
[ref]
5
And He brought him outside and said, Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars if you are able to number them. And He said unto him, So shall your seed be.
[ref]
6
And he believed in Jehovah, and He accounted it unto him for righteousness.
[ref]
7
And He said unto him, I am Jehovah, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.
[ref]
8
And he said, Lord Jehovah, how shall I know that I shall inherit it?
[ref]
9
And He said unto him, Take for Me a three year old heifer, a three year old female goat, a three year old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
[ref]
10
And he took all these for Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and put each piece against each other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
[ref]
11
And when the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
[ref]
12
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.
[ref]
13
And He said to Abram: Consider to know that your seed shall be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years.
[ref]
14
And I will also judge the nation whom they serve; and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
[ref]
15
And as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
[ref]
16
But in the fourth generation they shall return here; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.
[ref]
17
And it came to pass, when the sun had gone down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.
[ref]
18
On that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram, saying: To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates;
[ref]
19
the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
[ref]
20
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the giants,
[ref]
21
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
