Jacob was frightened and worried. He divided into two groups the people who were with him, and also his sheep, goats, cattle, and camels.

Relieve me of my worries and save me from all my troubles.

The danger of death was all around me; the horrors of the grave closed in on me; I was filled with fear and anxiety.

We want to remind you, friends, of the trouble we had in the province of Asia. The burdens laid upon us were so great and so heavy that we gave up all hope of staying alive.

I've lost all hope, so what if God kills me? I am going to state my case to him.

The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed.

His angel guards those who honor the LORD and rescues them from danger.

I waited patiently for the LORD's help; then he listened to me and heard my cry.

He pulled me out of a dangerous pit, out of the deadly quicksand. He set me safely on a rock and made me secure.

Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.

Many enemies were around me; but I destroyed them by the power of the LORD!

They swarmed around me like bees, but they burned out as quickly as a brush fire; by the power of the LORD I destroyed them.

The LORD is like a strong tower, where the righteous can go and be safe.

The poor and the helpless have fled to you and have been safe in times of trouble. You give them shelter from storms and shade from the burning heat. Cruel enemies attack like a winter storm,

King Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went to the Temple, placed the letter there in the presence of the LORD,

"Almighty LORD, God of Israel, seated above the winged creatures, you alone are God, ruling all the kingdoms of the world. You created the earth and the sky.

We all know, LORD, that the emperors of Assyria have destroyed many nations, made their lands desolate,

Now, LORD our God, rescue us from the Assyrians, so that all the nations of the world will know that you alone are God."

LORD, you are the one who protects me and gives me strength; you help me in times of trouble. Nations will come to you from the ends of the earth and say, "Our ancestors had nothing but false gods, nothing but useless idols.

Even though the fig trees have no fruit and no grapes grow on the vines, even though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no grain, even though the sheep all die and the cattle stalls are empty,

I will still be joyful and glad, because the LORD God is my savior.

Abraham believed and hoped, even when there was no reason for hoping, and so became "the father of many nations." Just as the scripture says, "Your descendants will be as many as the stars."

In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us?

If we suffer, it is for your help and salvation; if we are helped, then you too are helped and given the strength to endure with patience the same sufferings that we also endure.

From such terrible dangers of death he saved us, and will save us; and we have placed our hope in him that he will save us again,

Let us be bold, then, and say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"
