Then Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' helper since he was a young man, spoke up and said to Moses, "Stop them, sir!"

(SEE 13:3)

These are the spies Moses sent to explore the land. He changed the name of Hoshea son of Nun to Joshua.

Moses said to Joshua, "Pick out some men to go and fight the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on top of the hill holding the stick that God told me to carry."

Give Joshua his instructions. Strengthen his determination, because he will lead the people across to occupy the land that you see.'

Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the presence of all the people of Israel, "Be determined and confident; you are the one who will lead these people to occupy the land that the LORD promised to their ancestors.

The LORD himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid."

Then the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun and told him, "Be confident and determined. You will lead the people of Israel into the land that I promised them, and I will be with you."

Joshua son of Nun was filled with wisdom, because Moses had appointed him to be his successor. The people of Israel obeyed Joshua and kept the commands that the LORD had given them through Moses.

I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the spirit I have given you and give it to them. Then they can help you bear the responsibility for these people, and you will not have to bear it alone.

and he said to them, "We will never find a better man than Joseph, a man who has God's spirit in him."

The spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel's leader. Othniel went to war, and the LORD gave him the victory over the king of Mesopotamia.

Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He went through Gilead and Manasseh and returned to Mizpah in Gilead and went on to Ammon.

Samuel took the olive oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. Immediately the spirit of the LORD took control of David and was with him from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

The LORD's spirit left Saul, and an evil spirit sent by the LORD tormented him.

One of his attendants said, "Jesse of the town of Bethlehem has a son who is a good musician. He is also a brave and handsome man, a good soldier, and an able speaker. The LORD is with him."

I have heard that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that you are skillful and have knowledge and wisdom.

The one whom God has sent speaks God's words, because God gives him the fullness of his Spirit.

So then, friends, choose seven men among you who are known to be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and we will put them in charge of this matter.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.

There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service.

The Spirit gives one person a message full of wisdom, while to another person the same Spirit gives a message full of knowledge.

The Spirit gives one person the power to work miracles; to another, the gift of speaking God's message; and to yet another, the ability to tell the difference between gifts that come from the Spirit and those that do not. To one person he gives the ability to speak in strange tongues, and to another he gives the ability to explain what is said.

As the LORD had commanded, Moses put his hands on Joshua's head and proclaimed him as his successor.

The group presented them to the apostles, who prayed and placed their hands on them.

When they arrived, they prayed for the believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

and said, "Give this power to me too, so that anyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit."

They fasted and prayed, placed their hands on them, and sent them off.

Paul placed his hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came upon them; they spoke in strange tongues and also proclaimed God's message.

Do not neglect the spiritual gift that is in you, which was given to you when the prophets spoke and the elders laid their hands on you.

Be in no hurry to lay hands on people to dedicate them to the Lord's service. Take no part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.
