King David did not take a census of the people who were under the age of twenty, because of the LORD's promise to make the people of Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Jonathan, King David's uncle, was a skillful adviser and a scholar. He and Jehiel son of Hachmoni were in charge of the education of the king's sons.

They asked Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law which the LORD had given Israel through Moses, to get the book of the Law.

So Ezra brought it to the place where the people had gathered---men, women, and the children who were old enough to understand.
