Moses answered, "If you really mean what you say, then here in the presence of the LORD get ready to go into battle.
21
All your fighting men are to cross the Jordan and under the command of the LORD they are to attack our enemies until the LORD defeats them
22
and takes possession of the land. After that, you may return, because you will have fulfilled your obligation to the LORD and to the other Israelites. Then the LORD will acknowledge that this land east of the Jordan is yours.
23
But if you do not keep your promise, I warn you that you will be sinning against the LORD. Make no mistake about it; you will be punished for your sin.
24
So build your towns and the enclosures for your sheep, but do what you have promised!"
25
The men of Gad and Reuben said, "Sir, we will do as you command.
26
Our wives and children and our cattle and sheep will remain here in the towns of Gilead.
27
But all of us are ready to go into battle under the LORD's command. We will cross the Jordan and fight, just as you have said."
28
So Moses gave these commands to Eleazar, Joshua, and the other leaders of Israel:

"If the men of Gad and Reuben cross the Jordan ready for battle at the LORD's command and if with their help you are able to conquer the land, then give them the land of Gilead as their property.
Deuteronomy 3:16-20

And to the tribes of Reuben and Gad I assigned the territory from Gilead to the Arnon River. The middle of the river was their southern boundary, and their northern boundary was the Jabbok River, part of which formed the Ammonite border.

On the west their territory extended to the Jordan River, from Lake Galilee in the north down to the Dead Sea in the south and to the foot of Mount Pisgah on the east.

"At the same time, I gave them the following instructions: 'The LORD our God has given you this land east of the Jordan to occupy. Now arm your fighting men and send them across the Jordan ahead of the other tribes of Israel, to help them occupy their land.
19
Only your wives, children, and livestock---I know you have a lot of livestock---will remain behind in the towns that I have assigned to you.
20
Help the other Israelites until they occupy the land that the LORD is giving them west of the Jordan and until the LORD lets them live there in peace, as he has already done here for you. After that, you may return to this land that I have assigned to you.'

Joshua said to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and to half the tribe of Manasseh,

"Remember how the LORD's servant Moses told you that the LORD your God would give you this land on the east side of the Jordan as your home.
14
Your wives, your children, and your livestock will stay here, but your soldiers, armed for battle, will cross over ahead of the other Israelites in order to help them
15
until they have occupied the land west of the Jordan that the LORD your God has given them. When he has given safety to all the tribes of Israel, then you may come back and settle here in your own land east of the Jordan, which Moses, the LORD's servant, gave to you."
16
They answered Joshua, "We will do everything you have told us and will go anywhere you send us.
17
We will obey you, just as we always obeyed Moses, and may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses!
18
Whoever questions your authority or disobeys any of your orders will be put to death. Be determined and confident!"
