I will throw your enemies into panic; I will drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites as you advance.

I will not drive them out within a year's time; if I did, the land would become deserted, and the wild animals would be too many for you.

Instead, I will drive them out little by little, until there are enough of you to take possession of the land.

I will make the borders of your land extend from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give you power over the inhabitants of the land, and you will drive them out as you advance.

The southern border will extend from the wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. It will begin on the east at the southern end of the Dead Sea.

Then it will turn southward toward Akrabbim Pass and continue on through Zin as far south as Kadesh Barnea. Then it will turn northwest to Hazar Addar and on to Azmon,

where it will turn toward the valley at the border of Egypt and end at the Mediterranean.

"The western border will be the Mediterranean Sea.

"The northern border will follow a line from the Mediterranean to Mount Hor

and from there to Hamath Pass. It will continue to Zedad

and to Ziphron, and will end at Hazar Enan.

"The eastern border will follow a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham.

It will then go south to Harbel, east of Ain, and on to the hills on the eastern shore of Lake Galilee,

then south along the Jordan River to the Dead Sea. "These will be the four borders of your land."

So Moses said to the Israelites, "This is the land that you will receive by drawing lots, the land that the LORD has assigned to the nine and one-half tribes.
Deuteronomy 11:23-25

Then he will drive out all those nations as you advance, and you will occupy the land belonging to nations greater and more powerful than you.

All the ground that you march over will be yours. Your territory will extend from the desert in the south to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

Wherever you go in that land, the LORD your God will make the people fear you, as he has promised, and no one will be able to stop you.

Joshua 14:1-19

What follows is an account of how the land of Canaan west of the Jordan was divided among the people of Israel. Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the families of the Israelite tribes divided it among the population.

As the LORD had commanded Moses, the territories of the nine and one-half tribes west of the Jordan were determined by drawing lots.

Moses had already assigned the land east of the Jordan to the other two and one-half tribes. (The descendants of Joseph were divided into two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim.) However, Moses gave the Levites no portion of the territory. Instead, they received cities to live in, with fields for their cattle and flocks.

The people of Israel divided the land as the LORD had commanded Moses.

One day some people from the tribe of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. One of them, Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, said to him, "You know what the LORD said in Kadesh Barnea about you and me to Moses, the man of God.

I was forty years old when the LORD's servant Moses sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out this land. I brought an honest report back to him.
8
The men who went with me, however, made our people afraid. But I faithfully obeyed the LORD my God.
9
Because I did, Moses promised me that my children and I would certainly receive as our possession the land which I walked over.
10
But now, look. It has been forty-five years since the LORD said that to Moses. That was when Israel was going through the desert, and the LORD, as he promised, has kept me alive ever since. Look at me! I am eighty-five years old
11
and am just as strong today as I was when Moses sent me out. I am still strong enough for war or for anything else.
12
Now then, give me the hill country that the LORD promised me on that day when my men and I reported. We told you then that the race of giants called the Anakim were there in large walled cities. Maybe the LORD will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as the LORD said."

Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him the city of Hebron as his possession.
14
Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, because he faithfully obeyed the LORD, the God of Israel.
15
Before this, Hebron was called the city of Arba. (Arba had been the greatest of the Anakim.) There was now peace in the land.

"Divide the land among the tribes, according to their size.

Divide the land by drawing lots, and give a large share to a large tribe and a small one to a small tribe."
