Matthew 21:33-46

"Listen to another parable," Jesus said. "There was once a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to tenants and left home on a trip.

When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent his slaves to the tenants to receive his share of the harvest.
35
The tenants grabbed his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
36
Again the man sent other slaves, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.
37
Last of all he sent his son to them. 'Surely they will respect my son,' he said.
38
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the owner's son. Come on, let's kill him, and we will get his property!'
39
So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40
"Now, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" Jesus asked.
41
"He will certainly kill those evil men," they answered, "and rent the vineyard out to other tenants, who will give him his share of the harvest at the right time."

Jesus said to them, "Haven't you ever read what the Scriptures say? 'The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all. This was done by the Lord; what a wonderful sight it is!'

"And so I tell you," added Jesus, "the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce the proper fruits."

The chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables and knew that he was talking about them,

so they tried to arrest him. But they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet.
Mark 12:1-12

Then Jesus spoke to them in parables: "Once there was a man who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to tenants and left home on a trip.

When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent a slave to the tenants to receive from them his share of the harvest.

The tenants grabbed the slave, beat him, and sent him back without a thing.

Then the owner sent another slave; the tenants beat him over the head and treated him shamefully.

The owner sent another slave, and they killed him; and they treated many others the same way, beating some and killing others.

The only one left to send was the man's own dear son. Last of all, then, he sent his son to the tenants. 'I am sure they will respect my son,' he said.

But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the owner's son. Come on, let's kill him, and his property will be ours!'
8
So they grabbed the son and killed him and threw his body out of the vineyard.

"What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do?" asked Jesus. "He will come and kill those tenants and turn the vineyard over to others.
10
Surely you have read this scripture? 'The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all.
11
This was done by the Lord; what a wonderful sight it is!' "

The Jewish leaders tried to arrest Jesus, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

Isaiah 5:1-7

Listen while I sing you this song, a song of my friend and his vineyard: My friend had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.

He dug the soil and cleared it of stones; he planted the finest vines. He built a tower to guard them, dug a pit for treading the grapes. He waited for the grapes to ripen, but every grape was sour.

So now my friend says, "You people who live in Jerusalem and Judah, judge between my vineyard and me.

Is there anything I failed to do for it? Then why did it produce sour grapes and not the good grapes I expected?

"Here is what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge around it, break down the wall that protects it, and let wild animals eat it and trample it down.

I will let it be overgrown with weeds. I will not trim the vines or hoe the ground; instead, I will let briers and thorns cover it. I will even forbid the clouds to let rain fall on it."

Israel is the vineyard of the LORD Almighty; the people of Judah are the vines he planted. He expected them to do what was good, but instead they committed murder. He expected them to do what was right, but their victims cried out for justice.

I planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed. But look what you have become! You are like a rotten, worthless vine.
John 15:1-8

"I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener.

He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit.

You have been made clean already by the teaching I have given you.

Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can do so only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me.

"I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.

Those who do not remain in me are thrown out like a branch and dry up; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, where they are burned.

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, then you will ask for anything you wish, and you shall have it.

My Father's glory is shown by your bearing much fruit; and in this way you become my disciples.

I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow.

The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is God who matters, because he makes the plant grow.

There is no difference between the one who plants and the one who waters; God will reward each one according to the work each has done.

"At that time I instructed them, 'Listen to the disputes that come up among your people. Judge every dispute fairly, whether it concerns only your own people or involves foreigners who live among you.

Show no partiality in your decisions; judge everyone on the same basis, no matter who they are. Do not be afraid of anyone, for the decisions you make come from God. If any case is too difficult for you, bring it to me, and I will decide it.'

At the same time I gave you instructions for everything else you were to do.

"Appoint judges and other officials in every town that the LORD your God gives you. These men are to judge the people impartially.

"It may be that some cases will be too difficult for the local judges to decide, such as certain cases of property rights or of bodily injury or those cases that involve a distinction between murder and manslaughter. When this happens, go to the one place of worship chosen by the LORD your God,

and present your case to the levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time, and let them decide the case.

They will give their decision, and you are to do exactly as they tell you.

Accept their verdict and follow their instructions in every detail.

Anyone who dares to disobey either the judge or the priest on duty is to be put to death; in this way you will remove this evil from Israel.

Then everyone will hear of it and be afraid, and no one else will dare to act in such a way.

"After you have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is going to give you and have settled there, then you will decide you need a king like all the nations around you.

Be sure that the man you choose to be king is the one whom the LORD has chosen. He must be one of your own people; do not make a foreigner your king.
