As thousands of people crowded together, so that they were stepping on each other, Jesus said first to his disciples, "Be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees---I mean their hypocrisy.

Jesus said to them, "Take care; be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

"Take care," Jesus warned them, "and be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

Be on your guard against him yourself, because he was violently opposed to our message.

"How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the reserved seats in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces.

Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them:

Arrogance will bring your downfall, but if you are humble, you will be respected.

They do everything so that people will see them. Look at the straps with scripture verses on them which they wear on their foreheads and arms, and notice how large they are! Notice also how long are the tassels on their cloaks!

they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to have people call them 'Teacher.'

As he taught them, he said, "Watch out for the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace,

who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts.

Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another.

Don't do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves.

The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had:

I wrote a short letter to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to be their leader, will not pay any attention to what I say.
