The farms near Heshbon and the vineyards of Sibmah are destroyed---those vineyards whose wine used to make the rulers of the nations drunk. At one time the vines spread as far as the city of Jazer, and eastward into the desert, and westward to the other side of the Dead Sea.

Now I weep for Sibmah's vines as I weep for Jazer. My tears fall for Heshbon and Elealeh, because there is no harvest to make the people glad.

"This region which the LORD has helped the Israelites occupy---the towns of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sibmah, Nebo, and Beon---is good land for livestock, and we have so much livestock.

"The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out, and their cry can be heard as far as Jahaz; it can be heard by the people in Zoar, and it is heard as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah. Even Nimrim Brook has dried up.

But Sihon would not permit the people of Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered his army and went out to Jahaz in the wilderness and attacked the Israelites.

Sihon came out with all his men to fight us near the town of Jahaz,

Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

But Sihon would not let Israel do it. He brought his whole army together, camped at Jahaz, and attacked Israel.

Rebecca said to Isaac, "I am sick and tired of Esau's foreign wives. If Jacob also marries one of these Hittites, I might as well die."

If you are going to treat me like this, have pity on me and kill me, so that I won't have to endure your cruelty any longer."

Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down in the shade of a tree and wished he would die. "It's too much, LORD," he prayed. "Take away my life; I might as well be dead!"

Why let people go on living in misery? Why give light to those in grief ?

They are not happy till they are dead and buried;

until I would rather be strangled than live in this miserable body.

I give up; I am tired of living. Leave me alone. My life makes no sense.

And the people of this evil nation who survive, who live in the places where I have scattered them, will prefer to die rather than to go on living. I, the LORD Almighty, have spoken."

Why was I born? Was it only to have trouble and sorrow, to end my life in disgrace?

Now then, LORD, let me die. I am better off dead than alive."

After the sun had risen, God sent a hot east wind, and Jonah was about to faint from the heat of the sun beating down on his head. So he wished he were dead. "I am better off dead than alive," he said.

During those five months they will seek death, but will not find it; they will want to die, but death will flee from them.
