Deuteronomy 31:16
The LORD said to Moses, "You will soon die, and after your death the people will become unfaithful to me and break the covenant that I made with them. They will abandon me and worship the pagan gods of the land they are about to enter.
Deuteronomy 31:17
When that happens, I will become angry with them; I will abandon them, and they will be destroyed. Many terrible disasters will come upon them, and then they will realize that these things are happening to them because I, their God, am no longer with them.

They sacrificed to gods that are not real, new gods their ancestors had never known, gods that Israel had never obeyed.

They forgot their God, their mighty savior, the one who had given them life.

"When the LORD saw this, he was angry and rejected his sons and daughters.

'I will no longer help them,' he said; 'then I will see what happens to them, those stubborn, unfaithful people.

With their idols they have made me angry, jealous with their so-called gods, gods that are really not gods. So I will use a so-called nation to make them angry; I will make them jealous with a nation of fools.

My anger will flame up like fire and burn everything on earth. It will reach to the world below and consume the roots of the mountains.

" 'I will bring on them endless disasters and use all my arrows against them.

They will die from hunger and fever; they will die from terrible diseases. I will send wild animals to attack them, and poisonous snakes to bite them.

War will bring death in the streets; terrors will strike in the homes. Young men and young women will die; neither babies nor old people will be spared.

I would have destroyed them completely, so that no one would remember them.

But I could not let their enemies boast that they had defeated my people, when it was I myself who had crushed them.'

"Israel is a nation without sense; they have no wisdom at all.

They fail to see why they were defeated; they cannot understand what happened.
30
Why were a thousand defeated by one, and ten thousand by only two? The LORD, their God, had abandoned them; their mighty God had given them up.
31
Their enemies know that their own gods are weak, not mighty like Israel's God.
32
Their enemies, corrupt as Sodom and Gomorrah, are like vines that bear bitter and poisonous grapes,
33
like wine made from the venom of snakes.

"The LORD remembers what their enemies have done; he waits for the right time to punish them.
35
The LORD will take revenge and punish them; the time will come when they will fall; the day of their doom is near.
36
The LORD will rescue his people when he sees that their strength is gone. He will have mercy on those who serve him, when he sees how helpless they are.
37
Then the LORD will ask his people, 'Where are those mighty gods you trusted?
38
You fed them the fat of your sacrifices and offered them wine to drink. Let them come and help you now; let them run to your rescue.
39
" 'I, and I alone, am God; no other god is real. I kill and I give life, I wound and I heal, and no one can oppose what I do.
40
As surely as I am the living God, I raise my hand and I vow
41
that I will sharpen my flashing sword and see that justice is done. I will take revenge on my enemies and punish those who hate me.
42
My arrows will drip with their blood, and my sword will kill all who oppose me. I will spare no one who fights against me; even the wounded and prisoners will die.'
43
"Nations, you must praise the LORD's people--- he punishes all who kill them. He takes revenge on his enemies and forgives the sins of his people."

Moses and Joshua son of Nun recited this song, so that the people of Israel could hear it.

When Moses had finished giving God's teachings to the people,

he said, "Be sure to obey all these commands that I have given you today. Repeat them to your children, so that they may faithfully obey all of God's teachings.

These teachings are not empty words; they are your very life. Obey them and you will live long in that land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy."

That same day the LORD said to Moses,

"Go to the Abarim Mountains in the land of Moab opposite the city of Jericho; climb Mount Nebo and look at the land of Canaan that I am about to give the people of Israel.

You will die on that mountain as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor,

because both of you were unfaithful to me in the presence of the people of Israel. When you were at the waters of Meribah, near the town of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, you dishonored me in the presence of the people.

You will look at the land from a distance, but you will not enter the land that I am giving the people of Israel."

And so the LORD became furious with Israel and let raiders attack and rob them. He let the enemies all around overpower them, and the Israelites could no longer protect themselves.

Every time they would go into battle, the LORD was against them, just as he had said he would be. They were in great distress.

Then the LORD gave the Israelites leaders who saved them from the raiders.

But the Israelites paid no attention to their leaders. Israel was unfaithful to the LORD and worshiped other gods. Their fathers had obeyed the LORD's commands, but this new generation soon stopped doing so.

In addition, the leaders of Judah, the priests, and the people followed the sinful example of the nations around them in worshiping idols, and so they defiled the Temple, which the LORD himself had made holy.

The LORD, the God of their ancestors, had continued to send prophets to warn his people, because he wanted to spare them and the Temple.

When they were young, living in Egypt, they lost their virginity and became prostitutes.

The older one was named Oholah (she represents Samaria), and the younger one was named Oholibah (she represents Jerusalem). I married both of them, and they bore me children.

Although she was mine, Oholah continued to be a prostitute and was full of lust for her lovers from Assyria.

They were soldiers in uniforms of purple, noblemen and high-ranking officers; all of them were handsome young cavalry officers.

She was the whore for all the Assyrian officers, and her lust led her to defile herself by worshiping Assyrian idols.

She continued what she had begun as a prostitute in Egypt, where she lost her virginity. From the time she was a young woman, men slept with her and treated her like a prostitute.

So I handed her over to her Assyrian lovers whom she wanted so much.

They stripped her naked, seized her sons and daughters, and then killed her with a sword. Women everywhere gossiped about her fate.

"Even though her sister Oholibah saw this, she was wilder and more of a prostitute than Oholah had ever been.

She too was full of lust for the Assyrian noblemen and officers---soldiers in bright uniforms---and for the cavalry officers, all of those handsome young men.

I saw that she was completely immoral, that the second sister was as bad as the first.

"She sank deeper and deeper in her immorality. She was attracted by the images of high Babylonian officials carved into the wall and painted bright red, with sashes around their waists and fancy turbans on their heads.

The LORD has an accusation to bring against the people who live in this land. Listen, Israel, to what he says: "There is no faithfulness or love in the land, and the people do not acknowledge me as God.

They make promises and break them; they lie, murder, steal, and commit adultery. Crimes increase, and there is one murder after another.

And so the land will dry up, and everything that lives on it will die. All the animals and birds, and even the fish, will die."

I hate the gold bull worshiped by the people of the city of Samaria. I am furious with them. How long will it be before they give up their idolatry?

An Israelite craftsman made the idol, and it is not a god at all! The gold bull worshiped in Samaria will be smashed to pieces!

When they sow the wind, they will reap a storm! A field of grain that doesn't ripen can never produce any bread. But even if it did, foreigners would eat it up.

Israel has become like any other nation and is as useless as a broken pot.

Stubborn as wild donkeys, the people of Israel go their own way. They have gone off to seek help from Assyria and have paid other nations to protect them.

But now I am going to gather them together and punish them. Soon they will writhe in pain when the emperor of Assyria oppresses them.

"The more altars the people of Israel build for removing sin, the more places they have for sinning!

I write down countless teachings for the people, but they reject them as strange and foreign.

They offer sacrifices to me and eat the meat of the sacrifices. But I, the LORD, am not pleased with them, and now I will remember their sin and punish them for it; I will send them back to Egypt!

"The people of Israel have built palaces, but they have forgotten their own Maker. The people of Judah have built fortified cities. But I will send fire that will burn down their palaces and their cities."
