In the second year of the reign of King Asa of Judah, King Jeroboam's son Nadab became king of Israel, and he ruled for two years.

Baasha son of Ahijah, of the tribe of Issachar, plotted against Nadab and killed him as Nadab and his army were besieging the city of Gibbethon in Philistia.

At once he began killing all the members of Jeroboam's family. In accordance with what the LORD had said through his servant, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh, all of Jeroboam's family were killed; not one survived.

Does the war trumpet sound in a city without making the people afraid? Does disaster strike a city unless the LORD sends it?

As soon as Zimri became king he killed off all the members of Baasha's family. Every male relative and friend was put to death.

So the LORD says to you, 'I will bring disaster on you. I will do away with you and get rid of every male in your family, young and old alike.

May God strike me dead if I don't kill every last one of those men before morning!"

The LORD has kept me from harming you. But I swear by the living God of Israel that if you had not hurried to meet me, all of Nabal's men would have been dead by morning!"

All of Ahab's family and descendants are to die; I will get rid of every male in his family, young and old alike.

I will treat his family as I did the families of King Jeroboam of Israel and of King Baasha of Israel.

The LORD will rescue his people when he sees that their strength is gone. He will have mercy on those who serve him, when he sees how helpless they are.

The LORD saw the terrible suffering of the Israelites; there was no one at all to help them.

I, the LORD God of Israel, promised in the past that your family and your clan would serve me as priests for all time. But now I say that I won't have it any longer! Instead, I will honor those who honor me, and I will treat with contempt those who despise me.

Her remains will be scattered there like dung, so that no one will be able to identify them.' "

I will punish Jerusalem as I did Samaria, as I did King Ahab of Israel and his descendants. I will wipe Jerusalem clean of its people, as clean as a plate that has been wiped and turned upside down.

but they will be blown away like dust. Those who used to know them will wonder where they have gone.

You defeated them at Endor, and their bodies rotted on the ground.

The LORD is angry with his people and has stretched out his hand to punish them. The mountains will shake, and the bodies of those who die will be left in the streets like rubbish. Yet even then the LORD's anger will not be ended, but his hand will still be stretched out to punish.

but you have no tomb, and your corpse is thrown out to rot. It is covered by the bodies of soldiers killed in battle, thrown with them into a rocky pit, and trampled down.

I will turn Babylon into a marsh, and owls will live there. I will sweep Babylon with a broom that will sweep everything away. I, the LORD Almighty, have spoken."

Instead of being gathered and buried, their bones will be like manure lying on the ground. They will be spread out before the sun, the moon, and the stars, which these people have loved and served, and which they have consulted and worshiped.

They will destroy your city walls and tear down your towers. Then I will sweep away all the dust and leave only a bare rock.

The LORD says, "I will bring such disasters on the human race that everyone will grope about like someone blind. They have sinned against me, and now their blood will be poured out like water, and their dead bodies will lie rotting on the ground."

I will punish your children and rub your faces in the dung of the animals you sacrifice---and you will be taken out to the dung heap.

"Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again.

It is no good for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!"
