like a lion that longs to tear, and like a young lion lurking in secret places.

For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Jehovah.

The good man has perished from the earth, and there is no one upright among mankind. All of them lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his brother with a net.

But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of them lie in wait for him, men who have bound themselves by an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him; and now they are ready, waiting for the promise from you.

He was a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in secret places.

Will a lion roar in the forest when there is no prey for him? Will a young lion cry out of his den unless he has caught something?

Where is the den of the lions and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, the lioness, the lion's cub walked, and no one made them afraid?

The lion tore in pieces, enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, even his lairs with torn prey.

A voice of the wailing of the shepherds; for their splendor is destroyed. A voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is destroyed.

For among My people are found wicked ones; they lie in wait, as one who sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a young lion; he learned to catch prey, and he devoured men.

When she saw that she waited, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.

They take up all of them with the hook; they drag them with the net and gather them with the dragnet. On account of this they rejoice and exult.

But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, I will now arise, says Jehovah; I will set him in the safety for which he pants.

All my bones shall say, Jehovah, who is like You, who delivers the lowly from him who is too strong for him; yea, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?

The wicked have drawn out the sword and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to slaughter those who walk uprightly.

For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those who condemn his soul.

But He saves the needy from the sword, from the mouth of the mighty, and from their hand.

So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy upon the needy.

He who oppresses the poor to make increase for himself, and he who gives to the rich, shall surely come to poverty.

Like a roaring lion and a ranging bear, so is a wicked ruler over the lowly people.

What do you mean that you crush My people, and grind the faces of the poor? says the Lord Jehovah of Hosts.

Also the implements of the scoundrel are evil; he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks justice.

The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the sojourner.

Thus says Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn back from punishing it, for they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals.

They pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the helpless, and thrust aside the way of the afflicted. And a man and his father go in to the same girl, in order to profane My holy name.

So, therefore because you trample on the poor, and you take tribute of grain from him; you have built houses of hewn stones, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted desirable vineyards, but you shall not drink wine from them.

For I know your many transgressions, and your many sins: afflicting the just, taking bribes, and thrusting away the poor from justice in the gate.

You thrust through with his own arrows the head of his villages. They came out in a rage to scatter me; their exultation was to devour the humble in secret.
