The LORD said to Moses, "Hurry and go back down, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have sinned and rejected me.

They have already left the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made a bull-calf out of melted gold and have worshiped it and offered sacrifices to it. They are saying that this is their god, who led them out of Egypt.

that you do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all---whether man or woman,

I know that after my death the people will become wicked and reject what I have taught them. And in time to come they will meet with disaster, because they will have made the LORD angry by doing what he has forbidden."

But you are unfaithful, unworthy to be his people, a sinful and deceitful nation.

but everyone else was evil in God's sight, and violence had spread everywhere.

God looked at the world and saw that it was evil, for the people were all living evil lives.

But these people attack with insults anything they do not understand; and those things that they know by instinct, like wild animals, are the very things that destroy them.

I saw that you had already disobeyed the command that the LORD your God had given you, and that you had sinned against him by making yourselves a metal idol in the form of a bull-calf.

But the Israelites paid no attention to their leaders. Israel was unfaithful to the LORD and worshiped other gods. Their fathers had obeyed the LORD's commands, but this new generation soon stopped doing so.

but were rebellious and disloyal like their ancestors, unreliable as a crooked arrow.

But the LORD says, "Israel and Judah, what am I going to do with you? Your love for me disappears as quickly as morning mist; it is like dew, that vanishes early in the day.

I am surprised at you! In no time at all you are deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and are accepting another gospel.
