The four chief guards were Levites and had the final responsibility. They were also responsible for the rooms in the Temple and for the supplies kept there.

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "This is blood money, and it is against our Law to put it in the Temple treasury."

As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money;

He called his disciples together and said to them, "I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others.

Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.

You go on to the festival. I am not going to this festival, because the right time has not come for me."

Then they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

Once more they tried to seize Jesus, but he slipped out of their hands.

Jesus said, "A day has twelve hours, doesn't it? So those who walk in broad daylight do not stumble, for they see the light of this world.

But if they walk during the night they stumble, because they have no light."

At that same time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "You must get out of here and go somewhere else, because Herod wants to kill you."

Yet I must be on my way today, tomorrow, and the next day; it is not right for a prophet to be killed anywhere except in Jerusalem.

The teachers of the Law and the chief priests tried to arrest Jesus on the spot, because they knew that he had told this parable against them; but they were afraid of the people.
