But the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law rejected God's purpose for themselves and refused to be baptized by John.

One of the teachers of the Law said to him, "Teacher, when you say this, you insult us too!"

Jesus answered, "How terrible also for you teachers of the Law! You put onto people's backs loads which are hard to carry, but you yourselves will not stretch out a finger to help them carry those loads.

and one of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to trap him with a question.

A Jewish leader asked Jesus, "Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?"

Once a man came to Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what good thing must I do to receive eternal life?"

Then he led them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

They answered, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved---you and your family."

For if God's gift depends on the Law, then it no longer depends on his promise. However, it was because of his promise that God gave that gift to Abraham.
