Joshua 21:1-45

The leaders of the Levite families went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of all the tribes of Israel.

There at Shiloh in the land of Canaan they said to them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that we were to be given cities to live in, as well as pasture land around them for our livestock."

So in accordance with the LORD's command the people of Israel gave the Levites certain cities and pasture lands out of their own territories.

The families of the Levite clan of Kohath were the first to be assigned cities. The families who were descended from Aaron the priest were assigned thirteen cities from the territories of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

The rest of the clan of Kohath was assigned ten cities from the territories of Ephraim, Dan, and West Manasseh.

The clan of Gershon was assigned thirteen cities from the territories of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and East Manasseh.
7
The families of the clan of Merari were assigned twelve cities from the territories of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8
By drawing lots, the people of Israel assigned these cities and their pasture lands to the Levites, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

These are the names of the cities from the territories of Judah and Simeon which were given
10
to the descendants of Aaron who were of the clan of Kohath, which was descended from Levi. Their assignment was the first to be made.

They were given the city of Arba (Arba was Anak's father), now called Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasture land surrounding it.
12
However, the fields of the city, as well as its towns, had already been given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.

In addition to Hebron (one of the cities of refuge), the following cities were assigned to the descendants of Aaron the priest: Libnah,

Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh, with their pasture lands: nine cities from the tribes of Judah and Simeon.

From the territory of Benjamin they were given four cities: Gibeon, Geba,

Anathoth, and Almon, with their pasture lands.

Thirteen cities in all, with their pasture lands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.

The other families of the Levite clan of Kohath were assigned some cities from the territory of Ephraim.

They were given four cities: Shechem and its pasture lands in the hill country of Ephraim (one of the cities of refuge), Gezer,

Kibzaim, and Beth Horon, with their pasture lands.

From the territory of Dan they were given four cities: Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

Aijalon, and Gathrimmon, with their pasture lands.

From the territory of West Manasseh they were given two cities: Taanach and Gathrimmon, with their pasture lands.

These families of the clan of Kohath received ten cities in all, with their pasture lands.

Another group of Levites, the clan of Gershon, received from the territory of East Manasseh two cities: Golan in Bashan (one of the cities of refuge) and Beeshterah, with their pasture lands.

So the clan of Merari was assigned a total of twelve cities.

From the land that the people of Israel possessed, a total of forty-eight cities, with the pasture lands around them, was given to the Levites.

So the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he had solemnly promised their ancestors he would give them. When they had taken possession of it, they settled down there.
44
The LORD gave them peace throughout the land, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies had been able to stand against them, because the LORD gave the Israelites the victory over all their enemies.

The LORD kept every one of the promises that he had made to the people of Israel.

When a bull is offered to the LORD as a burnt offering or as a sacrifice in fulfillment of a vow or as a fellowship offering,

a grain offering of 6 pounds of flour mixed with 4 pints of olive oil is to be presented,
10
together with 4 pints of wine. The odor of this sacrifice is pleasing to the LORD.

That is what shall be offered with each bull, ram, sheep, or goat.
12
When more than one animal is offered, the accompanying offering is to be increased proportionately.
13
All native Israelites are to do this when they present a food offering, an odor pleasing to the LORD.
14
And if at any time foreigners living among you, whether on a temporary or a permanent basis, make a food offering, an odor that pleases the LORD, they are to observe the same regulations.
15
For all time to come, the same rules are binding on you and on the foreigners who live among you. You and they are alike in the LORD's sight;
16
the same laws and regulations apply to you and to them.

the following regulations for the people of Israel to observe in the land that he was going to give them.

When any food produced there is eaten, some of it is to be set aside as a special contribution to the LORD.
20
When you bake bread, the first loaf of the first bread made from the new grain is to be presented as a special contribution to the LORD. This is to be presented in the same way as the special contribution you make from the grain you thresh.
21
For all time to come, this special gift is to be given to the LORD from the bread you bake.
22
But suppose someone unintentionally fails to keep some of these regulations which the LORD has given Moses.
23
And suppose that in the future the community fails to do everything that the LORD commanded through Moses.

So he went back and found Balak still standing by his burnt offering with all the leaders of Moab.

Balaam uttered this prophecy: "Balak king of Moab has brought me From Syria, from the eastern mountains. 'Come speak for me,' he said. 'Put a curse on the people of Israel.'

How can I curse what God has not cursed, Or speak of doom when the LORD has not?
9
From the high rocks I can see them; I can watch them from the hills. They are a nation that lives alone; They know they are blessed more than other nations.
10
The descendants of Israel are like the dust--- There are too many of them to be counted. Let me end my days like one of God's people; Let me die in peace like the righteous."

Then Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I brought you here to curse my enemies, but all you have done is bless them."
12
He answered, "I can say only what the LORD tells me to say."

Then Balak said to Balaam, "Come with me to another place from which you can see only some of the Israelites. Curse them for me from there."
14
He took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Mount Pisgah. There also he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each of them.
15
Balaam said to Balak, "Stand here by your burnt offering, and I will meet God over there."
16
The LORD met Balaam, told him what to say, and sent him back to Balak to give him his message.
17
So he went back and found Balak still standing by his burnt offering, with the leaders of Moab. Balak asked what the LORD had said,

and Balaam uttered this prophecy: "Come, Balak son of Zippor, And listen to what I have to say.
19
God is not like people, who lie; He is not a human who changes his mind. Whatever he promises, he does; He speaks, and it is done.
20
I have been instructed to bless, And when God blesses, I cannot call it back.
21
I foresee that Israel's future Will bring her no misfortune or trouble. The LORD their God is with them; They proclaim that he is their king.
22
God has brought them out of Egypt; He fights for them like a wild ox.
23
There is no magic charm, no witchcraft, That can be used against the nation of Israel. Now people will say about Israel, 'Look what God has done!'
Numbers 24:1-26
1
By now Balaam knew that the LORD wanted him to bless the people of Israel, so he did not go to look for omens, as he had done before. He turned toward the desert
2
and saw the people of Israel camped tribe by tribe. The spirit of God took control of him,
3
and he uttered this prophecy: "The message of Balaam son of Beor, The words of the man who can see clearly,
4
Who can hear what God is saying. With staring eyes I see in a trance A vision from Almighty God.
5
The tents of Israel are beautiful,
6
Like long rows of palms Or gardens beside a river, Like aloes planted by the LORD Or cedars beside the water.
7
They will have abundant rainfall And plant their seed in well-watered fields. Their king shall be greater than Agag, And his rule shall be extended far and wide.
8
God brought them out of Egypt; He fights for them like a wild ox. They devour their enemies, Crush their bones, smash their arrows.
9
The nation is like a mighty lion; When it is sleeping, no one dares wake it. Whoever blesses Israel will be blessed, And whoever curses Israel will be cursed."
10
Balak clenched his fists in anger and said to Balaam, "I called you to curse my enemies, but three times now you have blessed them instead.
11
Now get on home! I promised to reward you, but the LORD has kept you from getting the reward."
12
Balaam answered, "I told the messengers you sent to me that
13
even if you gave me all the silver and gold in your palace, I could not disobey the command of the LORD by doing anything of myself. I will say only what the LORD tells me to say."
14
Balaam said to Balak, "Now I am going back to my own people, but before I go, I am warning you what the people of Israel will do to your people in the future."
15
Then he uttered this prophecy: "The message of Balaam son of Beor, The words of the man who can see clearly,
16
Who can hear what God is saying And receive the knowledge that comes from the Most High. With staring eyes I see in a trance A vision from Almighty God.
17
I look into the future, And I see the nation of Israel. A king, like a bright star, will arise in that nation. Like a comet he will come from Israel. He will strike the leaders of Moab And beat down all the people of Seth.
18
He will conquer his enemies in Edom And make their land his property, While Israel continues victorious.
19
The nation of Israel will trample them down And wipe out the last survivors."
20
Then in his vision Balaam saw the Amalekites and uttered this prophecy: "Amalek was the most powerful nation of all, But at the end it will perish forever."
21
In his vision he saw the Kenites, and uttered this prophecy: "The place where you live is secure, Safe as a nest set high on a cliff,
22
But you Kenites will be destroyed When Assyria takes you captive."
23
Balaam uttered this prophecy: "Who are these people gathering in the north?
24
Invaders will sail from Cyprus; They will conquer Assyria and Eber, But they, in turn, will perish forever."
25
Then Balaam got ready and went back home, and Balak went on his way.
Nehemiah 11:1-12

The leaders settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people drew lots to choose one family out of every ten to go and live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the rest were to live in the other cities and towns.

The people praised anyone else who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.

In the other towns and cities the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Temple workers, and the descendants of Solomon's servants lived on their own property in their own towns. The following is the list of the leading citizens of the province of Judah who lived in Jerusalem:

Members of the tribe of Judah: Athaiah, the son of Uzziah and grandson of Zechariah. His other ancestors included Amariah, Shephatiah, and Mahalalel, descendants of Judah's son Perez.

Maaseiah, the son of Baruch and grandson of Colhozeh. His other ancestors included Hazaiah, Adaiah, Joiarib, and Zechariah, descendants of Judah's son Shelah.

Of the descendants of Perez, 468 outstanding soldiers lived in Jerusalem.

Members of the tribe of Benjamin: Sallu, the son of Meshullam and grandson of Joed. His other ancestors included Pedaiah, Kolaiah, Maaseiah, Ithiel, and Jeshaiah.

Gabbai and Sallai, close relatives of Sallu. In all, 928 Benjaminites lived in Jerusalem.

Joel son of Zichri was their leader, and Judah son of Hassenuah was the second ranking official in the city.

Priests: Jedaiah son of Joiarib, and Jachin.

Seraiah, the son of Hilkiah and grandson of Meshullam. His ancestors included Zadok, Meraioth, and Ahitub, who was the High Priest.

In all, 822 members of this clan served in the Temple. Adaiah, the son of Jeroham and grandson of Pelaliah. His ancestors included Amzi, Zechariah, Pashhur, and Malchijah.
