Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down in the shade of a tree and wished he would die. "It's too much, LORD," he prayed. "Take away my life; I might as well be dead!"

Why let people go on living in misery? Why give light to those in grief ?

They are not happy till they are dead and buried;

Why won't God give me what I ask? Why won't he answer my prayer?

If I knew he would, I would leap for joy, no matter how great my pain. I know that God is holy; I have never opposed what he commands.

until I would rather be strangled than live in this miserable body.

Now then, LORD, let me die. I am better off dead than alive."

After the sun had risen, God sent a hot east wind, and Jonah was about to faint from the heat of the sun beating down on his head. So he wished he were dead. "I am better off dead than alive," he said.

But God said to him, "What right do you have to be angry about the plant?" Jonah replied, "I have every right to be angry---angry enough to die!"

My deep desire and hope is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage, so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.

But if by continuing to live I can do more worthwhile work, then I am not sure which I should choose.

but for your sake it is much more important that I remain alive.

Make sure that your endurance carries you all the way without failing, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Why do I keep on suffering? Why are my wounds incurable? Why won't they heal? Do you intend to disappoint me like a stream that goes dry in the summer?"

Why was I born? Was it only to have trouble and sorrow, to end my life in disgrace?

The LORD has stopped your punishment; he has removed all your enemies. The LORD, the king of Israel, is with you; there is no reason now to be afraid.
