"If someone hits his male or female slave in the eye and puts it out, he is to free the slave as payment for the eye.

If he knocks out a tooth, he is to free the slave as payment for the tooth.

"If any of you injure another person, whatever you have done shall be done to you.

If you break a bone, one of your bones shall be broken; if you put out an eye, one of your eyes shall be put out; if you knock out a tooth, one of your teeth shall be knocked out. Whatever injury you cause another person shall be done to you in return.

In such cases show no mercy; the punishment is to be a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, and a foot for a foot.

He ran away, but they chased him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
