Then Jacob gave him some bread and some of the soup. He ate and drank and then got up and left. That was all Esau cared about his rights as the first-born son.

So they spread a false report among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, "That land doesn't even produce enough to feed the people who live there. Everyone we saw was very tall,

You said that your children would be captured, but I will bring them into the land that you rejected, and it will be their home.

But the invited guests paid no attention and went about their business: one went to his farm, another to his store,

Let no one become immoral or unspiritual like Esau, who for a single meal sold his rights as the older son.

The LORD your God is bringing you into a fertile land---a land that has rivers and springs, and underground streams gushing out into the valleys and hills;

There you will never go hungry or ever be in need. Its rocks have iron in them, and from its hills you can mine copper.

but the land that you are about to enter is a land of mountains and valleys, a land watered by rain.

The LORD your God takes care of this land and watches over it throughout the year.

The LORD says, "Israel, I wanted to accept you as my child and give you a delightful land, the most beautiful land in all the world. I wanted you to call me father and never again turn away from me.

It was then that I promised to take them out of Egypt and lead them to a land I had chosen for them, a rich and fertile land, the finest land of all.

The LORD said to Moses, "How much longer will these people reject me? How much longer will they refuse to trust in me, even though I have performed so many miracles among them?

But in spite of what I said, you still would not trust the LORD,

My friends, be careful that none of you have a heart so evil and unbelieving that you will turn away from the living God.

When God made his solemn promise, "They will never enter the land where I would have given them rest"---of whom was he speaking? Of those who rebelled.

We see, then, that they were not able to enter the land, because they did not believe.

For we have heard the Good News, just as they did. They heard the message, but it did them no good, because when they heard it, they did not accept it with faith.

Those who first heard the Good News did not receive that rest, because they did not believe. There are, then, others who are allowed to receive it.

Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God---Jesus, the Son of God.

For even though you know all this, I want to remind you of how the Lord once rescued the people of Israel from Egypt, but afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
