Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons."

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

And he said to him, "Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that."

"And it shall come to pass, when the LORD has done for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you ruler over Israel,

I said in my haste, "All men [are] liars."

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But [when] the desire comes, [it is] a tree of life.

Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: "My way is hidden from the LORD, And my just claim is passed over by my God"?

He gives power to the weak, And to [those who have] no might He increases strength.

But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew [their] strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

" I, [even] I, [am] He who comforts you. Who [are] you that you should be afraid Of a man [who] will die, And of the son of a man [who] will be made like grass?

And immediately Jesus stretched out [His] hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"

But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How [is it] that you have no faith?"

For indeed, when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were troubled on every side. Outside [were] conflicts, inside [were] fears.

Now the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go to the land of Judah." So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

"[Is] this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, 'Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?' For [it would have been] better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness."

"Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: "In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength." But you would not,

And you said, "No, for we will flee on horses" -- Therefore you shall flee! And, "We will ride on swift [horses" -- Therefore] those who pursue you shall be swift!

[It is] good that [one] should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the LORD.

[It is] good for a man to bear The yoke in his youth.

Then Achish would say, "Where have you made a raid today?" And David would say, "Against the southern [area] of Judah, or against the southern [area] of the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern [area] of the Kenites."

David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring [news] to Gath, saying, "Lest they should inform on us, saying, 'Thus David did.' " And thus [was] his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines.

Then David arose and fled that day from before Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

Now David took these words to heart, and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

Then Achish said to his servants, "Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me?

Now it happened in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together for war, to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, "You assuredly know that you will go out with me to battle, you and your men."

And David said to Achish, "Surely you know what your servant can do." And Achish said to David, "Therefore I will make you one of my chief guardians forever."

And the lords of the Philistines passed in review by hundreds and by thousands, but David and his men passed in review at the rear with Achish.

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, "Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become our adversary. For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these men?

Then Achish called David and said to him, "Surely, [as] the LORD lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army [is] good in my sight. For to this day I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you.

So David said to Achish, "But what have I done? And to this day what have you found in your servant as long as I have been with you, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"

"Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master's servants who have come with you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart."

Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,

So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.
