Then David sent to Joab, [saying,] "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent Uriah to David.

'Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?' -- then you shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.' "

"The archers shot from the wall at your servants; and [some] of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also."

'Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife [to be] your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.

[and] Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.

Now the three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab and Abishai and Asahel. And Asahel [was as] fleet of foot as a wild gazelle.

Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please, let me go over and take off his head!"

But the king said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because the LORD has said to him, 'Curse David.' Who then shall say, 'Why have you done so?' "

Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, "[Deal] gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains orders concerning Absalom.

Now Abishai the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of [another] three. He lifted his spear against three hundred [men,] killed [them,] and won a name among [these] three.

Now their sisters [were] Zeruiah and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah [were] Abishai, Joab, and Asahel -- three.

Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few."

So his armorbearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart."

"But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant,

"and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who [were] in the camp.
