Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, "Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works [have been] very good toward you.

"For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw [it] and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?"

And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, "Why should he be killed? What has he done?"

"Moreover, my father, see! Yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the corner of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that [there is] neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you. Yet you hunt my life to take it.

"May the LORD repay every man [for] his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered you into [my] hand today, but I would not stretch out my hand against the LORD's anointed.

For all His judgments [were] before me; And [as for] His statutes, I did not depart from them.

Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes.

Deliver [those who] are drawn toward death, And hold back [those] stumbling to the slaughter.

If you say, "Surely we did not know this," Does not He who weighs the hearts consider [it?] He who keeps your soul, does He [not] know [it?] And will He [not] render to [each] man according to his deeds?

Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all [who are] appointed to die.

Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Then Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day?"

So the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be [that] the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father's house exemption [from taxes] in Israel."

therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full count to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as a wife.

Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, 'Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.' And I have directed [my] young men to such and such a place.
