"driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land [as] an inheritance, as [it is] this day.

"When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you,

"and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them [and] utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.

"And the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you little by little; you will be unable to destroy them at once, lest the beasts of the field become [too] numerous for you.

"But the LORD your God will deliver them over to you, and will inflict defeat upon them until they are destroyed.

"Hear, O Israel: You [are] to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

"[It is] not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart [that] you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations [that] the LORD your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

" I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn [their] backs to you.

"I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beast of the field become too numerous for you.

"Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.
