"houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant -- when you have eaten and are full --

"[then] beware, lest you forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

"lest -- [when] you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell [in them;]

"when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

"If I have made gold my hope, Or said to fine gold, '[You are] my confidence';

If I have rejoiced because my wealth [was] great, And because my hand had gained much;

Why should I fear in the days of evil, [When] the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?

None [of them] can by any means redeem [his] brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him --

That he should continue to live eternally, [And] not see the Pit.

Their inner thought [is that] their houses [will last] forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call [their] lands after their own names.

This is the way of those who [are] foolish, And of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah

God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of [your] dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

"Here is the man [who] did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, [And] strengthened himself in his wickedness."

Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set [your] heart [on them.]

The rich man's wealth [is] his strong city, And like a high wall in his own esteem.

Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For [riches] certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle [toward] heaven.

Woe to those who join house to house; They add field to field, Till [there is] no place Where they may dwell alone in the midst of the land!

And Ephraim said, 'Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself; [In] all my labors They shall find in me no iniquity that [is] sin.'

Therefore they sacrifice to their net, And burn incense to their dragnet; Because by them their share [is] sumptuous And their food plentiful.

" Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

Come now, [you] rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon [you!]

Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

"Man [who is] born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.

Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit";

Instead you [ought] to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."

" There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

" But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.

They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.

They spend their days in wealth, And in a moment go down to the grave.

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning, [That] they may follow intoxicating drink; Who continue until night, [till] wine inflames them!

But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine: "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!"

[Woe to] you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;

Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, [And] invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;

If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage [is it] to me? If [the] dead do not rise, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!"

whose end [is] destruction, whose god [is their] belly, and [whose] glory [is] in their shame -- who set their mind on earthly things.

But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

For we [have spent] enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles -- when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.

"In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, 'I sit [as] queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.'
