In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,

Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.

"that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:

"after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

"And as John was finishing his course, he said, 'Who do you think I am? I am not [He.] But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.'

And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism."

Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."

'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'
