"How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"

"But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

To the Chief Musician. Set to "The Deer of the Dawn." A Psalm of David. My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? [Why are You so] far from helping Me, [And from] the words of My groaning?

But You [are] holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel.

They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.

All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying,]

But You [are] He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust [while] on My mother's breasts.

Be not far from Me, For trouble [is] near; For [there is] none to help.

They gape at Me [with] their mouths, [Like] a raging and roaring lion.

My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.

I can count all My bones. They look [and] stare at Me.

But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me!

Save Me from the lion's mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me.

You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!

My praise [shall be] of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him.

All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You.

All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive.

They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done [this.]

I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You.

Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face.

Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.

I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them.

But as for me, my prayer [is] to You, O LORD, [in] the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation.

Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.

And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in trouble; Hear me speedily.

You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; My adversaries [are] all before You.

They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away.

I gave My back to those who struck [Me,] And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, [our] faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

But He [was] wounded for our transgressions, [He was] bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace [was] upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.

And they made His grave with the wicked -- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor [was any] deceit in His mouth.

He shall see the labor of His soul, [and] be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

"And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it [shall be] with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

" And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for [his] only [son,] and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

" Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion," Says the LORD of hosts. "Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.

Then He answered and told them, "Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

"Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?"

Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things.

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!"

For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not [one] of His bones shall be broken."

And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

"For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled [them] in condemning [Him.]

"Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took [Him] down from the tree and laid [Him] in a tomb.

Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

"Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come --

"that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the [Jewish] people and to the Gentiles."

So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at [his] lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening.

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

"And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!"

"Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;

"to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.

"Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!

Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

Let death seize them; Let them go down alive into hell, For wickedness [is] in their dwellings [and] among them.

But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in You.

Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand.

Let his days be few, [And] let another take his office.

Let his children continually be vagabonds, and beg; Let them seek [their bread] also from their desolate places.

Let there be none to extend mercy to him, Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children.

Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

Because he did not remember to show mercy, But persecuted the poor and needy man, That he might even slay the broken in heart.

As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, So let it enter his body like water, And like oil into his bones.

"The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born."

"While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

"Men [and] brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;

(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.

"For it is written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it'; and, 'Let another take his office.'
