"We took all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining.

"And when the LORD your God delivers it into your hands, you shall strike every male in it with the edge of the sword.

"But of the cities of these peoples which the LORD your God gives you [as] an inheritance, you shall let nothing that breathes remain alive,

"lest they teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you sin against the LORD your God.

And they utterly destroyed all that [was] in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

So it was [that] all who fell that day, both men and women, [were] twelve thousand -- all the people of Ai.

So Joshua conquered all the land: the mountain country and the South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded.
