"they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.

"But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.

"Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:

'Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.

Then the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

"And the time we took to come from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered [was] thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, just as the LORD had sworn to them.

"For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they were consumed.

"Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which [is] in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession;

"and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people;

You turn man to destruction, And say, "Return, O children of men."

You carry them away [like] a flood; [They are] like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass [which] grows up:

For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified.

Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in [His] goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

But with most of them God was not well pleased, for [their bodies] were scattered in the wilderness.

Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.

Now with whom was He angry forty years? [Was it] not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?

And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?

But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

'Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of the men who went to spy out the land.
