Then the city wall was broken through, and all the men of war [fled] at night by way of the gate between two walls, which was by the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans [were] still encamped all around against the city. And [the king] went by way of the plain.

"Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry your belongings out through it.

"And the prince who [is] among them shall bear [his belongings] on [his] shoulder at twilight and go out. They shall dig through the wall to carry [them] out through it. He shall cover his face, so that he cannot see the ground with [his] eyes.

Therefore they arose and fled at twilight, and left the camp intact -- their tents, their horses, and their donkeys -- and they fled for their lives.

And when these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank, and carried from it silver and gold and clothing, and went and hid [them;] then they came back and entered another tent, and carried [some] from there [also,] and went and hid [it.]

And they went after them to the Jordan; and indeed all the road [was] full of garments and weapons which the Syrians had thrown away in their haste. So the messengers returned and told the king.

In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver And his idols of gold, Which they made, [each] for himself to worship, To the moles and bats,

For in that day every man shall throw away his idols of silver and his idols of gold -- sin, which your own hands have made for yourselves.

Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the LORD's wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.

"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
