And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,

Why are your valiant [men] swept away? They did not stand Because the LORD drove them away.

So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed."

For the LORD had caused the army of the Syrians to hear the noise of chariots and the noise of horses -- the noise of a great army; so they said to one another, "Look, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us!"

Therefore they arose and fled at twilight, and left the camp intact -- their tents, their horses, and their donkeys -- and they fled for their lives.

Though Nineveh of old [was] like a pool of water, Now they flee away. "Halt! Halt!" [they cry;] But no one turns back.

Do not go out into the field, Nor walk by the way. Because of the sword of the enemy, Fear [is] on every side.

And it happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not called your name Pashhur, but Magor-Missabib.

"For thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see [it.] I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword.

For I heard many mocking: "Fear on every side!" "Report," [they say,] "and we will report it!" All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, [saying,] "Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him."

Their tents and their flocks they shall take away. They shall take for themselves their curtains, All their vessels and their camels; And they shall cry out to them, 'Fear [is] on every side!'

In that day Egypt will be like women, and will be afraid and fear because of the waving of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which He waves over it.

'Yes, I will make many peoples astonished at you, and their kings shall be horribly afraid of you when I brandish My sword before them; and they shall tremble [every] moment, every man for his own life, in the day of your fall.'
