"O generation, see the word of the LORD! Have I been a wilderness to Israel, Or a land of darkness? Why do My people say, 'We are lords; We will come no more to You'?

Can a virgin forget her ornaments, [Or] a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.

"For My people [are] foolish, They have not known Me. They [are] silly children, And they have no understanding. They [are] wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge."

'For among My people are found wicked [men;] They lie in wait as one who sets snares; They set a trap; They catch men.

The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their [own] power; And My people love [to have it] so. But what will you do in the end?

"But My people would not heed My voice, And Israel would [have] none of Me.

"Oh, that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways!

The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master's crib; [But] Israel does not know, My people do not consider."

Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because [they have] no knowledge; Their honorable men [are] famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.

For He said, "Surely they [are] My people, Children [who] will not lie." So He became their Savior.

"Lately My people have risen up as an enemy -- You pull off the robe with the garment From those who trust [you,] as they pass by, Like men returned from war.

"O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me.

Have you not brought this on yourself, In that you have forsaken the LORD your God When He led you in the way?

I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands.

You have forsaken Me," says the LORD, "You have gone backward. Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting!

"Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more.

"Then they cried out to the LORD, and said, 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths; but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.'

O LORD, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. "Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the LORD, The fountain of living waters."

Will [a man] leave the snow water of Lebanon, [Which comes] from the rock of the field? Will the cold flowing waters be forsaken for strange waters?

For with You [is] the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

"but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

On the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

Has a nation changed [its] gods, Which [are] not gods? But My people have changed their Glory For [what] does not profit.

" As the thief is ashamed when he is found out, So is the house of Israel ashamed; They and their kings and their princes, and their priests and their prophets,

Their idols [are] silver and gold, The work of men's hands.

They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;

Those who make them are like them; [So is] everyone who trusts in them.

Do not put your trust in princes, [Nor] in a son of man, in whom [there is] no help.

His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.

"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all [is] vanity."

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all [was] vanity and grasping for the wind. [There was] no profit under the sun.

For there is a man whose labor [is] with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also [is] vanity and a great evil.

For [God] gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who [is] good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to [him who is] good before God. This also [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.

"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "All [is] vanity."

Those who make an image, all of them [are] useless, And their precious things shall not profit; They [are] their own witnesses; They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.

Surely all his companions would be ashamed; And the workmen, they [are] mere men. Let them all be gathered together, Let them stand up; Yet they shall fear, They shall be ashamed together.

The craftsman stretches out [his] rule, He marks one out with chalk; He fashions it with a plane, He marks it out with the compass, And makes it like the figure of a man, According to the beauty of a man, that it may remain in the house.

Then it shall be for a man to burn, For he will take some of it and warm himself; Yes, he kindles [it] and bakes bread; Indeed he makes a god and worships [it;] He makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.

And the rest of it he makes into a god, His carved image. He falls down before it and worships [it,] Prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you [are] my god!"

And no one considers in his heart, Nor [is there] knowledge nor understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire, Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals; I have roasted meat and eaten [it;] And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?"

They lavish gold out of the bag, And weigh silver on the scales; They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god; They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.

They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it And set it in its place, and it stands; From its place it shall not move. Though [one] cries out to it, yet it cannot answer Nor save him out of his trouble.

Why do you spend money for [what is] not bread, And your wages for [what] does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat [what is] good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.

These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
