For the fields of Heshbon languish, [And] the vine of Sibmah; The lords of the nations have broken down its choice plants, Which have reached to Jazer And wandered through the wilderness. Her branches are stretched out, They are gone over the sea.

Therefore I will bewail the vine of Sibmah, With the weeping of Jazer; I will drench you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh; For battle cries have fallen Over your summer fruits and your harvest.

"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon,

"the country which the LORD defeated before the congregation of Israel, [is] a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock."

" From the cry of Heshbon to Elealeh and to Jahaz They have uttered their voice, From Zoar to Horonaim, [Like] a three-year-old heifer; For the waters of Nimrim also shall be desolate.

But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

"Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz.

Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

'But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

And Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these [who are] the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?"

"If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now -- if I have found favor in Your sight -- and do not let me see my wretchedness!"

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I [am] no better than my fathers!"

"Why is light given to him who is in misery, And life to the bitter of soul,

Who rejoice exceedingly, [And] are glad when they can find the grave?

So that my soul chooses strangling [And] death rather than my body.

I loathe [my life;] I would not live forever. Let me alone, For my days [are but] a breath.

"Then death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of those who remain of this evil family, who remain in all the places where I have driven them," says the LORD of hosts.

Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow, That my days should be consumed with shame?

"Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for [it is] better for me to die than to live!"

And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, "[It is] better for me to die than to live."

In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
