A present [is] a precious stone in the eyes of its possessor; Wherever he turns, he prospers.

A wicked [man] accepts a bribe behind the back To pervert the ways of justice.

A man's gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man [is] a friend to one who gives gifts.

"and also say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob [is] behind us.' " For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."

And their father Israel said to them, "If [it must be] so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down a present for the man -- a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

So David received from her hand what she had brought him, and said to her, "Go up in peace to your house. See, I have heeded your voice and respected your person."
