And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised [his] birthright.

And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies [is] a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it [are] men of [great] stature.

'But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

"But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.

lest there [be] any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills;

"a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones [are] iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.

"but the land which you cross over to possess [is] a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven,

"a land for which the LORD your God cares; the eyes of the LORD your God [are] always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year.

" But I said: 'How can I put you among the children And give you a pleasant land, A beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?' " And I said: 'You shall call Me, "My Father," And not turn away from Me.'

"On that day I raised My hand in an oath to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, 'flowing with milk and honey,' the glory of all lands.

Then the LORD said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?

"Yet, for all that, you did not believe the LORD your God,

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?

So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard [it.]

Since therefore it remains that some [must] enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [our] confession.

But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
