But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] moldy.

Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you dwell among us; so how can we make a covenant with you?"

So they said to him: "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt,

"Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, 'Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We [are] your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us." '

"And these wineskins which we filled [were] new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey."

So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.

Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities [were] Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim.

Then all the rulers said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD God of Israel; now therefore, we may not touch them.

And the rulers said to them, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them."

"But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites [is] not yet complete."

"And you shall destroy all the peoples whom the LORD your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that [will be] a snare to you.

And Saul answered, "God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan."

He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all [that was] good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.

Then he said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD." So they had him ride in his chariot.

But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.

And when His disciples James and John saw [this,] they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?"

But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.

"They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

They zealously court you, [but] for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.
