So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, "You [are] blessed of the LORD, for you have shown this kindness to your lord, to Saul, and have buried him.

"Now therefore, let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them."

Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

Then they took their bones and buried [them] under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth Shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns -- three hilly regions.

Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.

Then the young man who told him said, "As I happened by chance [to be] on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

"O mountains of Gilboa, [Let there be] no dew nor rain upon you, Nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

Then the Philistines gathered together, and came and encamped at Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped at Gilboa.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
