Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.

So she called his name Joseph, and said, "The LORD shall add to me another son."

And the name of the second he called Ephraim: "For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."

And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt [were] two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.

Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, "Indeed your father [is] sick"; and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

"And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, [are] mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."

So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will bless, saying, 'May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!' " And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region [was] a place for livestock,

"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon,

Therefore they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan."

"Now why will you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?

"For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

'Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me,

"So the LORD's anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone.

"For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people."

"but we ourselves will be armed, ready [to go] before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

"For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan."

"and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,

"But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: "Your servants will do as my lord commands.

"but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, just as my lord says."

And Moses said to them: "If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: "As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.

So Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country.

Atroth and Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah,

And the children of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim,

And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who [were] in it.

Also Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them Havoth Jair.

His glory [is like] a firstborn bull, And his horns [like] the horns of the wild ox; Together with them He shall push the peoples To the ends of the earth; They [are] the ten thousands of Ephraim, And they [are] the thousands of Manasseh."

The lot fell to the children of Joseph from the Jordan, by Jericho, to the waters of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goes up from Jericho through the mountains to Bethel,

and went down westward to the boundary of the Japhletites, as far as the boundary of Lower Beth Horon to Gezer; and it ended at the sea.

The border of the children of Ephraim, according to their families, was [thus:] The border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth Addar as far as Upper Beth Horon.

Then it went down from Janohah to Ataroth and Naarah, reached to Jericho, and came out at the Jordan.

The separate cities for the children of Ephraim [were] among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.

Then the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us [only] one lot and one share to inherit, since we [are] a great people, inasmuch as the LORD has blessed us until now?"

But the children of Joseph said, "The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, [both those] who [are] of Beth Shean and its towns and [those] who [are] of the Valley of Jezreel."

Blessed [is] the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

A Song of Ascents. Blessed [is] every one who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways.

Your wife [shall be] like a fruitful vine In the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants All around your table.

She had strong branches for scepters of rulers. She towered in stature above the thick branches, And was seen in her height amid the dense foliage.
