And when he came, behold Eli was sitting on a seat by the wayside, watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and reported, all the city cried out.

So the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and spoke the words in the ears of the people. And all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

And he recognized it and said, It is my son's tunic. An evil beast has devoured him. Joseph has been rent and torn to pieces.

And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, I will go down into Sheol mourning for my son. Thus his father wept for him.

And all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.
