The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his dealings. And he was of the house of Caleb.

As the proverb of the ancients says, Wickedness proceeds from the wicked. But my hand shall not be against you.

you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand have acquired me this wealth.

And the rulers of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?

or eaten my morsel by myself, and the fatherless has not eaten of it

Their eyes bulge with fatness; they have more than the heart could imagine.

They scoff and speak of evil oppression; they speak arrogantly.

Be hospitable to one another without murmuring.

Cast your bread upon the waters; for you shall find it after many days.

Give a share to seven, and also to eight; for you do not know what evil shall be on the earth.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Now one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David had sent messengers from the wilderness to bless our master; and he yelled at them.

But the men were very good to us, and we have not been shamed, nor have we missed anything all the days we have traversed with them, when we were in the fields.

We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.

The man answered and said to them, Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes!

as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not put to death;
