Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.

Now Jehovah said to Abram: Depart from your land, from your kindred and from your father's house, to a land that I will show you.

The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

And you shall answer and say before Jehovah your God: My father was an Aramean, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous.

Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

and say, Thus says the Lord Jehovah to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

And if it seems evil to you to serve Jehovah, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers have served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.

And Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father's.

And now you have proceeded to depart because you have longed for your father's house. But why have you stolen my gods?

With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you. For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.
