And the sons of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, at the mouth of Jehovah, these cities and their common lands:

You shall therefore plot out the land into seven parts and bring the map here to me, and I shall cast lots for you here before Jehovah our God.

And you shall divide the land by lot as an inheritance among your families; to the larger you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance; there everyone's inheritance shall be whatever falls to him by lot. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.

They shall have the cities to dwell in; and their common land shall be for their cattle, for their herds, and for all their animals.

The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposition of it is from Jehovah.

Casting lots puts an end to contentions, and separates the mighty from each other.

the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,
