But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married to a husband.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, chief of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and humbled her.

And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and extremely furious, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.

And Hamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

And they said, Should he treat our sister like a harlot?

This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband, turns aside and has been defiled;

Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.

Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her companion, so you have dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, says Jehovah.

You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband.

And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another, she commits adultery.

So then if, while her husband lives, she becomes another man's, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she becomes another man's.

Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to leave her husband.

But, indeed, in case she does leave, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to send away his wife.

Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled; but prostitutes and adulterers God will judge.
