For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

Because John had said to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.

And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.

Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

So she, having been instructed by her mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Immerser.

And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.
Mark 6:14-28

Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, John the Immerser has been raised from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.

Others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.

But when Herod heard, he said, This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead.

For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.

For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.

Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but was not able;

for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday made a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.

And when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.

He also swore to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.
24
So she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Immerser.
25
And immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, I want you to give me on a platter at once the head of John the Immerser.
26
And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to slight her.
27
And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,
28
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.

Therefore I will apportion to Him with the great, and He shall divide the spoils with the strong; because He has poured out His soul unto death; and He was reckoned among the transgressors; and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Luke 9:21-25

saying, The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

Then He said to them all, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life on account of Me will save it.

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or suffers loss?
