And she did so again and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in your father's house till my son Shelah is grown. For he thought, Lest he also die like his brothers. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

And she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.

And Judah acknowledged them and said, She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he never knew her again.

And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand, saying, This one came out first.

And afterward out came his brother who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah.

The sons of Shelah the son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of the linen workers of the house of Ashbea;

And it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb.

And it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came forth; and she said, How have you broken through this breach for yourself? Therefore his name was called Perez.

The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.

Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez begot Hezron;

Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon;

Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.

The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by the daughter of Shua, the Canaanitess. Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the eyes of Jehovah, so He killed him.

The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.

The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who had transgressed in the devoted thing.

All the sons of Perez who dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred and sixty-eight valiant men.

Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the sons of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king's hand in all matters concerning the people.
