Where shall we go up? Our brethren have caused our hearts to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to the heavens; moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.

(The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim.

They were also regarded as giants, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.

All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns.

Hear, O Israel: You are crossing over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the heavens,

a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you have known, and of whom you have heard it said, Who can stand before the sons of Anak?

None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.

Caleb dispossessed the three sons of Anak from there: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, born to Anak.

And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he dispossessed from there the three sons of Anak.
