butter from the cattle, and milk of the flock, with fat of lambs; and rams of the sons of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of wheat; and you drank wine, the blood of the grapes.

But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you grew fat, you grew thick, you are gorged! And he forsook the God who had made him, and treated with contempt the Rock of his salvation.

Many bulls have encircled Me; strong bulls of Bashan have surrounded Me.

Because you were glad, because you rejoiced, O destroyers of My inheritance; because you are fat like a heifer in lush grass, and bellow like bulls;

Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their punishment.

You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, drink the blood of the rulers of the earth, of rams and lambs, of goats and bulls, all of them fatlings of Bashan.

Woe to those at ease in Zion, and those trusting in the mountain of Samaria, noted as chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came.

And he bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver; and he built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, Samaria, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill.

Thus says Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn back from punishing it, for they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals.

They pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the helpless, and thrust aside the way of the afflicted. And a man and his father go in to the same girl, in order to profane My holy name.

Proclaim in the palaces in Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Gather yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see great tumults in its midst, and oppressions in its midst.

For they do not know to do right, declares Jehovah, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

So, therefore because you trample on the poor, and you take tribute of grain from him; you have built houses of hewn stones, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted desirable vineyards, but you shall not drink wine from them.

Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, and make the poor of the land to fail,

in order to buy the poor with silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

You shall neither mistreat a sojourner nor oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

If you afflict them to humiliate them, and they make an outcry to cry out unto Me, I will hear and give heed to their cry;

If you lend money to My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not lay interest on him.

Beware that there not be a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, approaches; and your eye be evil against your needy brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to Jehovah against you, and it become sin unto you.

For the needy will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, You shall open, to open your hand unto your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, I will now arise, says Jehovah; I will set him in the safety for which he pants.

I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the poor.

Do not rob the poor, because he is poor; nor oppress the afflicted in the gate;

for Jehovah will plead their case, and plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

Do not remove the ancient landmarks, and do not enter into the fields of the fatherless;

for their Redeemer is mighty; He shall plead their case against you.

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold the tears of the oppressed ones, and they had no comforter! And on the side of those who oppressed them there was power, but they had no comforter.

If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, do not be astonished at the matter; for He who is higher than the highest watches; so there are those higher than they.

Learn to do good, seek justice, set straight the oppressor, judge for the orphan, plead for the widow.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.

Oh how the faithful city has become a harlot! It was full of justice; righteousness lodged in it; but now, murderers!

Your rulers are rebellious and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe, and pursues rewards. They do not judge for the orphan, nor does the cause of the widow come before them.

Woe to those who join house to house, laying field to field, until there is no more space for you to dwell alone in the midst of the earth!

Is not this the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

For among My people are found wicked ones; they lie in wait, as one who sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

They have grown fat, they gleam. Yes, they surpass the deeds of the wicked; they do not plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may get rich; and they do not judge the right of the needy.

For thus has Jehovah of Hosts said, Cut down trees and cast a mound against Jerusalem! This is the city to be punished; she is full of oppression in her midst.

if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your hurt;

In you they have made light of father and mother; in your midst they have oppressed the sojourner; in you they have mistreated the orphan and the widow.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me, declares the Lord Jehovah.

Her rulers in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy souls, and to get dishonest gain.

The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the sojourner.

Woe to those who devise wickedness and do evil on their beds! In the morning light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

Therefore thus says Jehovah: Behold, I am devising evil against this family, from which you shall not remove your necks; nor shall you walk haughtily, for this is an evil time.

And I said, Hear now, O heads of Jacob, and you rulers of the house of Israel; is it not for you to know justice.

who also eat the flesh of My people, and flay their skin off from them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot, and as flesh in the kettle.

And do not oppress the widow, or the fatherless, the alien, or the poor. And do not devise evil in your heart, a man against his brother.

But they refused to heed, and gave a stubborn shoulder, and they made their ears heavy that they might not hear.

And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against those swearing to a lie; and against those who defraud the hired laborer of his pay, and turn away the widow, and the fatherless, and the alien; and who do not fear Me, says Jehovah of Hosts.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your calamities that are coming upon you.

Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

A nation whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your land and your produce, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually.

For he has crushed and forsaken the poor, he has seized a house which he did not build.

Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel. He has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his stomach with my delicacies; he has rinsed me out.

And they lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and drink the wine of those being punished in the house of their God.

And they have cast lots for My people. And have given a boy as payment for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.
