My people seek advice from their wooden idols, and their magic wand expounds to them. For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray, and they have committed adultery against their God.

He who commits adultery with a woman lacks heart; he who does so destroys his own soul.

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whoever goes astray by it is not wise.

For a harlot is a deep pit, and a foreign woman is a narrow well.

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives off bubbles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly.

Your eyes will see strange things and your heart will speak perversities.

They struck me, but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When I awake, I will ask for more; to do it again.

Surely oppression makes a fool out of a wise man; and a bribe destroys the heart.

And the lute, and the harp, the tambourine, and pipe, and wine, are at their feasts; but they do not regard the work of Jehovah, neither do they give attention to the work of His hands.

But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink have gone astray. The priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are swallowed up by wine; they have gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with giddiness, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come upon you unexpectedly.

And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

Let us walk decently, as in the day, not in carousings and drunkenness, not in cohabitation and licentiousness, not in strife and envy.
