This is the Word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had set him free from Ramah, when he had taken him, being bound in chains, from among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, who were being carried away captive to Babylon.

And he returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar unto Jehovah.

A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, I will go down into Sheol mourning for my son. Thus his father wept for him.

In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; my hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; my soul refused to be comforted.

Therefore I said, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly; do not insist on comforting me because of the devastation of the daughter of my people.

And they said, Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and lo, the youngest is with our father today, and one is not.

And Jacob their father said to them, You have bereaved me: Joseph is not, Simeon is not, and you would take Benjamin. All these things are against me.

Why then do You not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust, and You shall seek me diligently, but I will no longer be.

Yet he passed away, and lo, he was no more; indeed, I sought for him, but he could not be found.

Our fathers have sinned and are no more; but we have borne their iniquities.
