If You are dealing with me like this, please kill and destroy me, if I have found favor in Your eyes; and do not let me see my distress!

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he requested for his soul that he might die, and said, It is enough! Now, Jehovah, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!

Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter of soul,

who are joyful with exultation, and are glad when they meet the grave;

so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than my body.

I loathe my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone, for my days are but a breath.

O that You would hide me in Sheol, that You would conceal me until Your wrath is turned back, that You would appoint me a decree, and remember me!

Cursed be the day in which I was born; let not the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.

And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew without compassion; and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noon;

Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

And now, O Jehovah, please take my life from me. For it is better for me to die than to live.

And it happened when the sun rose, that God appointed a scorching east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he fainted; and he begged for his soul to die. And he said, It is better for me to die than to live.

For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

And being persuaded of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith,

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and striving of spirit.

Moreover I saw under the sun in the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there.

So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of Jehovah was strong upon me.

Why do You show me evil, and You cause me to look upon toil? For destruction and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention rises up.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and striving of spirit; and there was no profit under the sun.

For what has man from all his labor, and from the striving of his heart, in which he has labored under the sun?

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This is also vanity and striving of spirit.

Remember the time of life; why have you created the sons of men for vanity?
