The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

These are also proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah transcribed.

He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five.

And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

He who begets a fool does it to his sorrow; the father of a fool has no joy.

A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.

A foolish son is the ruin of his father, and the contentions of a wife, a continual dripping.

My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

Yea, my heart shall rejoice when your lips speak right things.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice; and he who begets a wise child shall be glad because of him.

Your father and your mother shall be glad, and she who bore you shall rejoice.

Whoever loves wisdom causes his father to rejoice; but a companion of harlots wastes wealth.

The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a lad set loose brings shame to his mother.

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he shall have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and acted wisely under the sun. This also is vanity.
